How to Make a Quick and Super Delicious French Toast || French Waffle Toast

This “French Toast Waffle” is a heavenly twist on the classic French toast. With a slightly crispy outside and soft, fluffy inside, it offers the perfect contrast of textures. The addition of cinnamon and maple syrup makes it a comforting and indulgent breakfast or brunch option that you simply must try!

Where is French Toast originated?

French Toast is a beloved breakfast choice made by soaking bread in beaten eggs and milk and then panfrying it. Traditionally, French Toast is made with stale bread, milk, egg, and butter. In France, it is known as “pain perdu,” which means “lost bread” and refers to the use of stale or leftover bread in its making. Instead of throwing the bread away, people revamped it as a new dish, which is both delicious and sustainable. This shows how people in olden times knew how to use food waste.

In the Middle Ages, French Toast was a luxurious dish enjoyed only by the wealthy upper class. However, it became a popular dish among the common people in the 19th century, and its popularity spread to different European countries in various forms. The name French Toast, however, has its origins in North America, not France. A few theories suggest that French immigrants in the 18th century popularized the dish, while others say that it is called French toast because of its buttery, decadent nature. Regardless of its origins, French Toast has become a popular and decadent breakfast dish enjoyed around the world.

How to make a French Toast or French Waffle Toast

French Toast is an easy and quick dish to make with only a few ingredients. When I have a craving for something slightly sweet, French toast is one of my go-to breakfast dishes or even a quick snack. Recently, I tried making it in both the classic French Toast style and in my own way, using a waffle maker. Using a different cooking equipment produced a different outcome, and my experiment resulted in an upgraded version of French Toast, which I called “French Waffle Toast” or “French Toast Waffle.” It was super delicious, and I’m excited to share it with you.

French Toast in Waffle Style is so much better than the classic pan-fried version. The outer skin is slightly firmer and crispier, creating a good textural contrast with the soft and moist French Toast. Trust me and give it a try!
If you’re wondering how to make French Waffle Toast, it’s simple. The ingredients are the same as French Toast, but you cook it with a waffle maker instead of a flat frying pan. This gives it a beautiful honeycomb pattern and provides a crispy skin while still keeping the toast moist.

Topping Suggestions

You can either choose from the below-listed toppings or make up your own. These toppings will make your French waffle toast even fancier and a little bit indulgently delicious.

1. Maple syrup, a pinch of cinnamon powder, banana, and toasted seeds: Sunflower seeds are a perfect pairing. Add your favorite nuts and seeds, drizzle syrup or honey and dust some cinnamon powder on top. This is my favourite topping.
2. Fresh strawberries, blueberries, and some sweetener such as dusted sugar powder, maple syrup, or honey.
3. Dairy-based toppings such as whipped cream or yogurt, along with some fresh fruit and maple syrup or honey.

Ingredients Explained

☑️ Bread: You can use any type of sandwich bread, but I highly recommend trying it with seeded sandwich bread. Not only is it healthier, but the seeds also provide a beautiful texture to the soft and moist toast. Be mindful that bread can quickly become soggy and fall apart if soaked too long.

☑️ Milk: You can use any type of milk, whether plant-based or non-plant based. It helps all the ingredients mix in the liquid, making the toast soft and moist inside.

☑️Eggs: Eggs are the basic and most important ingredient in making French Toast, providing the flavor and nutrients. Unless you have a special dietary requirement, you should use eggs.

☑️Sugar or maple syrup: Use your preferred sweetener, such as honey, sugar, maple syrup, or date syrup, to make the French toast a little more indulgent. French toast has a sweet flavor to it. This French toast is not so sweet. You can always add maple syrup on top. Adjust the amount of sugar to suit your taste.

☑️Cinnamon and vanilla extract: These simple spices will provide a subtle and exotic sweet flavor note in the background. Half a teaspoon will be enough.

Ingredients

  • 1 and half cup of milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tbs of Maple syrup or brown sugar or any sweetener of your choice
  • Vanilla extract 1/2 ts
  • Salt pinch
  • Cinnamon powder 1/2 teaspoon (ts)
  • 6-7 slices of sandwich bread or brioche bread
  • Butter or vegetable oil to grease the waffle maker or pan.

Instructions

Step 1 - Making Wet Mixture

➊In a large bowl, crack 3 eggs and whisk first until smooth. This helps to prevent lumpy egg yolk in the mixture.
➋ Combine milk, maple syrup/sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and cinnamon in a bowl. Mix well.
➌ Preheat the waffle griddle or non-stick frying pan if you don't have a waffle iron.
➍ Grease the griddle with butter or oil.
➎ While heating the griddle, dip sandwich bread in the wet mix and place them quickly onto the waffle griddle. While heating the griddle, dip sandwich bread in the wet mix and place them quickly onto the waffle griddle.
➏Flip the waffle pan and heat the other side. Cook both sides of the bread until they are nicely browned,
➏Remove the waffles from the pan gently and place them on a plate. Serve with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Bread can quickly become soft and fall apart if soaked too long. Soak a few times and place on the pan.
  • You can keep the leftover waffle wet mix in the fridge up to a couple of days.  Next time, you just soak the bread and make waffle toast instantly.
