When you think of satay sauce, what comes to mind? Most people probably picture a plate of grilled chicken or meat skewers served with satay sauce, right? Satay sauce is a popular dipping sauce in Southeast Asian countries- Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Each country has its style of satay sauce.

Super Easy and Quick Recipe
This recipe is incredibly simple and easy, so much so that even 5-year-old kids can make it. Plus, it’s quick to prepare, so you really can’t make any excuses not to make it. 🙂 The sauce lasts quite a while – several weeks if you store it properly.

Vegan-friendly
Peanut-based satay sauces often contain fish sauce for its salty and umami flavour. However, a vegan version is made using only soy sauce to achieve an umami flavour note.

Coconut Cream or Milk free
Many satay sauce recipes call for coconut cream or milk as it provides a rich and creamy texture. However, it can solidify in the fridge due to its saturated fat content, so I opted it out to keep the sauce in a liquid state by not using coconut cream.

Versatile Sauce
It pairs well with many dishes including vegetables, meat, and seafood dishes—as a dipping sauce and stir-fry sauce. I use this sauce for buckwheat burritos (buckwheat wrap sandwich rolls).

Key ingredients to make the satay sauce

Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is a key ingredient in making satay sauce. It’s unimaginable to call it satay sauce without peanut butter! You can use store-bought peanut butter for the recipe, but I highly recommend making your own. The flavour is incredible and incomparable to commercial ones. Plus, it’s easy to make. Soy Sauce, Vinegar and Water
Soy sauce contributes the main salty and umami flavour to this sauce, while vinegar adds a slightly tangy flavour, brightening it up. Water helps dilute the saltiness of the soy sauce and makes the peanut butter-based sauce more liquid. The best vinegar options for this sauce are rice wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

How to Use Satay Sauce

☑️Dipping Sauce
Use it as a dipping sauce for vegetables, meats and seafood. Add a little chopped chilli and chopped peanuts on the sauce as garnish.

☑️Sandwich or Wrap Bread Spread
Use it as a sandwich or wrap bread roll spread instead of unhealthy store-bought mayonnaise.

☑️Stir-fry sauce
For a stir-fry dish, add a bit more crushed garlic and chilli (if you like a little bit of spicy kick) into the pan or wok with the sauce, it will make a delicious stir-fry dish.

Ingredients

  • Peanut butter - 1/3 cup
  • Soy sauce 3tbs
  • Apple cider vinegar 2tbs
  • Water 1/3 cup
  • Sugar 2tbs
  • Grated Ginger 1/2 ts - 1ts
  • Garlic Crushed or finely chopped - 2 cloves
  • Smoked paprika 1/2 ts

Instructions

Combine all the sauce ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Refrigerate the sauce for about an hour to thicken. Use it generously in a wrap sandwich or as a dip for your veggies or meat.

Notes

'Smoked paprika adds a hint of smoky flavour which I love. But it is optional.
