How to make peanut butter from scratch

by Marcia

Homemade peanut butter is incredibly delicious. You won’t ever want to buy it from a supermarket again. Peanut butter is a versatile ingredient that can be used in many tasty dishes, such as sauces, soups, and spreads. It is an essential item to have in any kitchen pantry.

Commercial Peanut Butter VS Homemade Peanut Butter

If you love peanut butter or any kind of nut butter and consume it regularly, you may have noticed that a jar of peanut butter doesn’t last long and it can be quite expensive, especially if you prefer a high-quality one that’s free from salt, preservatives, sugar, unhealthy oils, and other additives. This is why I started making my own peanut butter at home. After comparing store-bought peanut butter with homemade peanut butter, I can confidently say that everyone should start making their own peanut butter at home.

Why should you make your own homemade Peanut Butter ?

Additives-free

When you examine the ingredients list of peanut butter, you’ll often find that more affordable ones contain sugar, salt, preservatives, and other unhealthy additives to increase shelf life and improve taste. However, homemade peanut butter is a healthier option, free from unnecessary additives.

Level of salt

Some products are available for purchase either without or with added salt. Personally, I prefer unsalted peanut butter if I have to buy one. I can always add salt to it according to my preference.

Room for creativity

Making your own peanut butter allows you to be creative and add other ingredients such as chia seeds, chocolate, hemp seed, etc. You can create a gourmet peanut butter that is not available in the supermarket.

Simplicity and Amazing Taste

Making peanut butter at home is simple and doesn’t take long. Most importantly, the taste of homemade peanut butter is incomparable to commercial ones. It has an intense roasted aroma and flavor that commercial peanut butter lacks.

How to Use Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a versatile ingredient that can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. It can be used as a spread, dip, soup, curry, smoothie, and more.

  • Asian-style Peanut Sauce: This can be used as a dipping sauce or as a sauce for making a wrap.
  • Smoothie : Add a table spoon of peanut butter to banana smoothie. It changes a game.
  • Chocolate cake
  • Soup/curry: Peanut butter adds richness and nutty aroma and flavor to the dish.

Ingredients and Technique Explained

☑️Peanut: you will need to roast some skinless peanuts in the oven for about 10 minutes at 170C until they’re golden brown. Alternatively, you can use an airfryer.

☑️Oil: Oil is not essential as peanuts already contain plenty of natural essential oil. However, it is easier to blend smoothly if you add a little oil. It is best to use neutral-flavored oil that has little or no flavor, such as peanut oil, canola oil, avocado oil or vegetable oil. Personally, I prefer extra virgin olive oil, although it has a stronger flavor, it is a good quality healthy oil. If you want to use olive oil, it is recommended to use mild olive oil instead of extra virgin olive oil.

☑️Salt: Salt is optional when making peanut butter. Add while blending or later, which helps to preserve longer.

☑️Blending: To make peanut butter, you will need a food processor or blender. The smoothness of the butter depends on how long you blend it. If you prefer chunky peanut butter, blend it for a shorter time. For a smoother texture, blend it for a little longer. Pause occasionally to check the consistency until it reaches your desired texture.

Ingredients

The recipe produces approximately a 500 ml jar of peanut butter.

  • 3cups of dry-roasted peanut
  • Salt
  • Oil (neutral flavouring oil)

Instructions

Mise en Place

➊ Gather all the necessary ingredients.
➋ Airfry or roast the peanuts in a preheated oven at 170°C for about 10-15 minutes. The roasting time may vary depending on the type of oven you are using. Roast them until they turn lightly golden brown in color.
➌ Allow the roasted peanuts to cool down before serving.

Cooking

➎ Blend peanuts in a blender or food processor until smooth. Stop occasionally to scrape down the sides. The longer you blend, the smoother the peanut butter will be.
➎ Add a little bit of oil. It can help to mix the peanut butter thoroughly and make it smoother, especially if your blender or food processor is not powerful enough. You can skip adding oil.
➏ Finally, season the peanut butter with a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
